After the 2020’s postponement, this year, Tokyo is ready to launch the 2021 Olympics. However, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games are underway. But, Covid-19 may have an impact on the game. So, you will have to rely on the Olympics opening ceremony 2021 live stream from home, as the tickets, will be limited, and the exact number of allowed spectators is not decided yet.
Covid-19 has changed the total policy of the Olympic 2021, which also enforced the Olympic committee to define the “Basic Policy” of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2021 Summer Olympics. The Olympic opening ceremony is going to take place on July 23, 2021.
- Start Time: 7 a.m. EDT/ 8.00 pm local time (JST)

Opening Ceremony Preparations
Although the preparation for Olympic 2021 started a long time ago, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (TOCOG) presented their preparation report back in 2017. They had released a document named “Basic Policy” for the Olympics as well as the Paralympics. The basic policy document was created based on the feedback from the experts and from the public opinions.
However, the Olympic committee announced Mansai Nomura as Chief Creative Director for opening as well as closing events. Nomura is a traditional Japanese theatre actor. However, he did not continue his role and stepped down and became an advisor. Then Hiroshi Sasaki was named as the new Chief Creative Director among six more creative directors.
Marco Balich from the Balich Worldwide Shows became the producer, who has experienced some other Olympic ceremonies, including the 2006 and 2014 Winter Olympics. Moreover, he also produced the 2016 Summer Olympics too.
Organizers are taking all the possible preparations for the opening ceremony. However, the expected number of athletes for the opening ceremony has been down to 6,000 from the 11,000 from 200 countries. But the organizers don’t have any logistic shortage, so if the expected attendee increases, they can provide full support.
Typically, Japan focuses on opening ceremony themes on the ancient Japanese cultural element along with international peace. But, in the 2021 Olympics, Japan will be themed as the opening ceremony on Japanese technology and popular culture.
Parade of Nations
As a part of the Parade of Nations in Tokyo 2021 Summer Olympic Opening ceremony, athletes and associated officials from the participating countries will take an entry to the Olympic Stadium, which will be preceded by the flag and placard bearer. However, the National Olympic Committee can choose the flag bearer for each county, or athletes can propose their name too.
Like other Olympics, this year, it will also follow the Olympic tradition. As the Olympic was originated in Greek, they will enter first in the stadium. Usually, another team enters in alphabetical order, and this year will be the same too. However, each country will have to follow the Japanese language for the order, which is happening for the first time in Japan as previously held in the Olympics in Japan in 1964 using the English language.
According to tradition, the host nation enters last, so you will see the Japanese flag at the Parade of Nations’ end. However, the name of the countries will be announced in English, Japanese and French. For your information, the official languages for the Olympics are English and French.
After Greece, the Refugee Olympic team Will enter next, which consists of refugees from different countries.
There is a change in the parade order, in which the host countries for the next two Olympics will enter at the end just before the host nation. So, France and the USA will take the entrance before Japan.
Is Russia Participating in the Parade of Nations?
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned Russia from participating in all international sporting events for four years on December 9, 2019. It was because the Russian government tampered with the lab data that was produced for WADA in January 2019. However, WADA planned to allow the individually cleared athletes from Russia to participate in the 2020 Summer Olympics, but under a neutral banner instead of using the country name. However, individually cleared players will not be able to compete in team sports.
Later, Russia appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the WADA’s decision on the ban. However, the CAS ruled to reduce the penalty to two years, which will also allow the athletes to join any international sports event individually without using the Russian flag, or anthem, or even the country name.
The Tokyo Olympic Opening Ceremony will take place at the Japan National Stadium, which was known as New National Stadium. However, this stadium was rebuilt with a new design and structure in 2019. Later, it was handed to the International Olympic Committee right after that for the opening ceremony preparation.
This stadium can accommodate 60,102 people for the Olympic events. However, for the regular events, the capacity is up to 80,016. Due to the COVID-19 situation, the committee may not allow 60,000 attendees. How many people can attend the Olympic opening ceremony is yet to be decided.
There will be no more postponements, and the Olympic committee will run the event at any cost. However, the recent COVID- 19 vaccination program may help the Olympic players.
Tokyo is ready to host the Olympics 2021, and all the preparations are going on for the opening and closing ceremony. However, the ceremonies will be simple considering the Covid-19 countermeasures. The committee did not make any announcements yet about the format of the ceremonies. But the statement from the organizing committee confirms that ceremonial events will be designed to try to reflect the Covid-19 experience.
